Autumn high-pressure windows in the Mont Blanc massif are rare and often short. When they arrive, the trails above 2000m are firm, the air is cool, and the afternoon thunderstorms that plague summer are absent.
The TMB circuit is quietest in October. Mountain Junkies Club is running a group session on the Grand Balcon Nord route on Saturday — a 28km ridge traverse with 1,400m of ascent that captures the massif at its finest.
