Years cycling west Ireland
I grew up cycling the roads of Connemara. I know what they feel like in February, which ones flood, and which views are worth the climb.
I've been riding the west coast of Ireland since I was a teenager — first on borrowed bikes, then properly, then obsessively. I know the Burren, the Aran Islands by ferry, the Dingle Peninsula, the Sky Road. Not as a visitor. As someone who has ridden these roads in every season, in every type of weather.
When the Santé team reached out, they were looking for someone who could verify cycling properties in the west of Ireland — a region they couldn't easily visit themselves from their bases in Spain and France. I said yes because the platform is doing something I think is genuinely useful, and because the standard they set is one I'd want applied if I were booking somewhere myself.
My job is simple: I go there, I ride the routes, I check whether what the property says about itself is actually true. Then I report back to Marco, who has the final word.

How the Regional Member process works
Regional Members aren't self-appointed. Here's how I became part of the team and what the verification process actually looks like.
01
Nominated by a sport expert
I was referred to the team by Tom Hargreaves, Santé's trail running expert, after I'd spent time guiding on Saintfield events and became known in the community. I then went through a detailed conversation with the cycling expert team before being formally invited.
02
Briefed on the standard
Before I assessed anything, Marco Belletti walked me through exactly what a Santé cycling listing needs to qualify — road quality, bike storage, route access, what "close to the climb" actually means versus what properties claim. I've used that framework on every visit since.
03
Site visits with structured notes
Every property I assess gets a detailed written report, not just a rating. I check the claims in the listing description against what's actually there, ride the access routes, and look for the things that property owners often overlook.
04
Expert sign-off before listing
My recommendations go to Marco before anything is published. He reads the report, sometimes asks follow-up questions, and makes the final call. I'm the eyes on the ground — he has the final word.
Properties I've verified
These have been visited in person, assessed against Santé's standard, and approved by Marco Belletti before publishing.
The Burren Bike Lodge
Kinvara, Co. Galway
Cycling-focused accommodation
“I stayed here twice before recommending it. The loop out to Black Head is one of the best road cycling routes in Ireland — tarmac in excellent condition as of autumn 2024.”
Connemara Cycling Retreat
Clifden, Co. Galway
Guided cycling accommodation
“Decent infrastructure, honest about road quality (some sections on the Sky Road are rough — they tell you this upfront, which I respect). The guided option is worth it for first-timers.”
Wild Atlantic Farmhouse
Dingle Peninsula, Co. Kerry
Rural cycling base
“Excellent for loop riders doing the Slea Head circuit. The accommodation is simple but the route access from the door is hard to beat. Verified April 2025.”
